Rainbow Sugar Cookies

I wanted to share another "Inspired by Pinterest" find that I actually recreated! These fun looking rainbow sugar cookies caught my eye one day and I "had" to make them. So I picked up some fun gel food coloring colors (did you know they have aqua?) and sat down yesterday and made up my first batch.

But first here's the picture I pinned on Pinterest....yummy right?
Source Site: Souders Cookery
And here's how mine ended up looking...

I opted to omit the sprinkles, but don't they look awesome. They taste great too!!

But I also thought I'd share what I learned because the original source blog "told" me how to make them, but since I'm such a visual person I needed step-by-step "pictures." So I took some along the way and thought I'd share what I learn when making these.

Step 1: Make sugar cookie dough. I used a great recipe from my friend Amy (I'll add it to the end of the post).

Step 2: I split up the cookies and mixed up each color in a separate bowl...this was actually hard to do by hand, but I sucked it up and mixed.
Step 3: I rolled the dough into grape size balls...they varied as we went along making these. Obviously the larger the "grape-size" balls you make affect how big the end cookie will end up.

Step 4: Softly roll all the grape-size balls together to look like this. Don't overwork it or it will end up blending too much and mushing the colors together and they don't look as fun.
Step 5: Roll large ball between counter and your hand. I found if we floured up the surface it was actually a bit harder to roll and the cookie strand didn't stick together very well. However, flouring up your hands was very helpful.
Step 6: Starting from the center twist the coil of dough around to look like these. Give them some room they do expand when cooking (don't mind my dirty baking stone...but the uglier they look, the better the cook).

Amy's Soft Sugar Cookie Recipe:
3 eggs
2 t vanilla
1 c sour cream
1 1/2 c sugar
1 c shortening

Cream above ingredients together until smooth.
Then add:
2 t baking powder
1 t baking soda
5 c flour

Blend together and roll out to 1/4" thick. Bake at 375 for 9-11 minutes.

Be sure to catch this week's Inspired by Pinterest show on Thursday. I'll be sharing some fun t-shirt refashion ideas.
